Without further ado, we hope you enjoy the play (Presenter walks off. Narrators walk on, each on separate sides of stage) Narrator 1: Once upon a time; Adam, peace be upon him, and his wife Haw, may Allah be pleased with her, were residing In Earth, when one day Haw gave birth to their first children, a set of twins. It was a happy day and both parents loved their children dearly. The young boy was named Cabal. (Enter young Cabal and twin sister 1, start playing together on stage) Narrator 2: Soon after, Haw gave birth to her second set of twins and like before It was a young boy and girl. The boy was named Habit, (Enter young Habit and twin sister 2, start playing together with young Cabal and sister on stage) Narrator 1: (pause before reading this line, let young ones play and laugh a bit) They ere a very happy family who enjoyed the beautiful fruits and luxuries that Allah STW had blessed them with and thus the children grew up to be young strong and healthy. (Young kids walk off stage, big Habit (with sheep) and Cabal enter. Habit look after sheep, Cabal sort through grains) Narrator 2: Cabal would till the land while Habit would raise the cattle. Narrator 1 : As time went by the young boys reached an age where they desired lifelong partners. Allah STW revealed to Adam BUY to instruct the boys to marry the twin sister of their brother. (Sheep walk off) n smiling and stands next to Habit) is much more beautiful than yours! (Point to ugly twin sister who walks on offended) Ugly twin sister: What did you say to me? (With sass) Cabal: This is unfair, Im going to talk to father about this!! Cabal! Habit and ugly twin sister leave, Habit putting arm over his sister and looks like hes reassuring her) Narrator 2: Adam BUY was in a dilemma as he wanted to keep peace in the family UT did not want to disobey Allah Sets command. So like in any tough situations, the Prophet invoked Allah STW for guidance. Narrator 1: It was revealed that both brothers had to offer a sacrifice for Allah STW and whose ever was accepted had right on their side. (Cabal and Habit (with sheep) enter from different sides of stage and face back to back. Presenter put orange sheet on stage) Habit: Im going to give my best sheep! (Smiles and puts sheep in place) Cabal: I dont care what I give, Im Just going to give this rotting grain. All my work will e gone if I give my best grain, Eve worked too hard and put too much time and effort into my work Just to give it away! (Cabal and Habit leave stage, while sheep pulls orange sheet [represents fire consuming it] over him then leaves stage) Narrator 2: A fire descended and consumed Habits sacrifice thus Allah STW had accepted Habits sheep leaving Cabals rotting sacrifice as it was. Narrator 1: Adam BUY knew it was Habits sincere kind offering that would be the one accepted but Cabal became very angry confronting his father, demanding that Habits was only accepted because he thought Adam BUY had only prayed for Habit and not for himself. He promised his father to settle the matter between himself and his brother, but this was to have serious consequences. (Presenter remove grain from stage and put stone on stage. Habit and Cabal enter Cabal: Your sacrifice was accepted and mine was not, thats so unfair!! Daddys little boy always gets everything. I work all day tilling the land, sweating and you merely stand around watching cattle! You are always favored, you get to go out late at night hunting but Id never be allowed to! You dont deserve any of that and you certainly dont deserve my sister, only I do!! So for that I will surely kill you so that you will not marry my sister! Habit: Verily, Allah accepts only from those who are pious. If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you, for I fear Allah; the Lord of all that exists. Verily I intend to let you draw my sin on yourself as well as yours, then you will be one of the dwellers of the Fire, and that is the recompense for the wrong-doers. (Cabal picks up a stone and eyes Habit for a couple of seconds. Cabal then throws stone at Habit who lets out a cry as he falls to the ground. Cabal smiles and runs off stage) Narrator 2: Cabal the first murderer of mankind and Habit the first martyr of mankind. (Habit crawl offstage taking stone with him) Narrator 1: After some time, Adam BUY started looking for Habit as he was getting worried for he had not seen his beloved son for a long time. He asked Cabal who impudently replied that he was not his brothers keeper nor his protector. From this, Adam BUY knew what had happened and grieved that he had lost both his sons. Lost Cabal to Bills and lost Habit in death. Narrator 2: Adam BUY, a great Prophet continued spreading the message throughout his children and grandchildren despite this tragic incident, warning his children of Bills, giving this story as an example of the cruelness and deviousness of Bills. Narrator 1 : Meanwhile, Cabal was facing the consequences of his terrible crime. (Cabal enter dragging Habit. Place Habit in middle of stage and looking regretful starts pacing up and down stage) Cabal: Eve been traveling for days with this corpse on my back, yet still I do not know where to hide it, and on top of all this, the stench of this body is becoming more and ore unbearable! Oh what have I done! (Cabal falls to his knees in despair. Presenter put brown cloth on stage. Two crows letting out a crow. Crow 1 than uses her foot and wings to pretend to dig and then buries Crow 2 (puts brown cloth of Crow 2) then flies of Cabal: (standing up) Woe to me! Am I not even able to be as this crow and to hide the dead body of my brother? (Crow 2 crawls off stage leaving cloth. Cabal begins to bury Doing as crows did Then puts cloth over Habit) Narrator 2: Sending the crows was a mercy of Allah STW despite what Cabal had done ND thus showed Cabal how to hide the body of his brother therefore releasing one of his many burdens. This shows that Allahs mercy always remains, but it is up to the individual to run towards it and ask for forgiveness. (Cabal runs offstage. Habit crawls off taking cloth with him) Narrator 1: Unfortunately, Cabal did not run towards the mercy of Allah and instead ran far away from his family. He still believed that what he did was correct and continued to suffer from the whisperings of Bills. Presenter: Thank you for watching. The Perfect Blog Post Simpler Is Better Blog I have designed my fair share of blog themes from top to bottom, and while I have allowed myself to experiment some, I usually find that there is almost a formula for success. This doesnt mean that there are a bunch of hard and fast rules. It just means that successful blogs usually look a certain way for a reason. In art school, I was taught that I needed to learn the rules of art before I was allowed to break them. The same goes for many things in life.  Once you understand the rules, it will up to you to implement them, and break them, as you see fit. Here are a few of the rules for blog design that I have adopted over the years. Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively.  Ã¢â‚¬â€¢ Dalai Lama XIVLess Is Really More Often, we equate working on our blog with installing a new widget on our sidebar. Trust me, your sidebar doesnt need another widget. If fact, it probably needs less. What you really need is a blog that works with your goals, and converts on your call-to-action. Sounds simple, but how do we get there? Our blog design must serve our content well. Your layout should make your content easy to read and experience. 100% of our blog design needs to be about the  content that it is serving. A great blog design focuses on a single call to action. What do you want the reader to do when they come to your blog? You could pick seven different things. Pick one. With that, I would like to introduce the perfect blog post. Download a PDF copy of this diagram to use as you blog. The Content The content area of your blog should be the largest and most prominent. Your content is why your readers are here, and it should be: Easy To Read Use large, easy-to-read fonts with extra padding around the post and a fair amount of white space. Giving your content some breathing room will go a long way in making the post more readable. Contain Inline Call-To-Actions I like to include at least a few inline call-to-actions in each post. Prompting the reader to tweet a quote or a callout is easier than getting them to share a post at the end. To do this, we made our own custom plugin which we later  started giving away. Minimize Meta Data I usually try to keep meta-data to a minimum. When designing a blog, the author, category, and date information is up for debate. You will need to consider carefully your need for them. Keep it to the bare minimum. Keep Sharing Buttons To A Minimum I have personally come to believe that sharing buttons should be simple, minimal, and usually at the bottom of the post. After all, the post is about your content, not share buttons. Many blogs believe that more sharing buttons will equal more sharing, but that is rarely the case. The Sidebar The sidebar of your blog is becoming less and less important every day. You should evaluate it carefully, and it might be the first place where you start breaking some of the rules. Placement. Whether you place your sidebar on the left or right doesnt matter, though the right side is a bit more traditional for a blog. Generally speaking, putting things where the user expects them to be is a good thing. No Content. Less is more, especially when it comes to the sidebar. Medium has popularized the no-sidebar blog post, and it works. In general, go for as little as you can stand to have in the sidebar. Rethink The Standbys. I used to believe that a list of categories and recent blog posts belonged on every sidebar. Once I dug into my analytics data, I discovered that these items were rarely used. They may not be so important, after all. Search? Maybe. Usually, I end up including a search box somewhere on my blog, but only because I so often use it myself. This element may or may not be important for you. Dont Buy Ads On Your Own Blog. You may be tempted to fill your sidebar with a link to every important part of your site. Dont. I never take out ads on my own blog, and you shouldnt either. The Call to Action One of the reasons that I find all of this so important is that with social sharing and search engines, our blog is often  the first thing that our readers or future customers will see. In essence, your blog is your homepage. It  is not only important to make a good first impression, but it is also important to make sure that you are not asking too much of them on their first visit. I often think about a website visitor in terms of a dating relationship. If youve just met someone for the first time, you dont ask them to marry you. You have to get to know them first. The same goes for blog visitors. What is the most reasonable thing that we can ask of them? Are you trying to get them to the altar when you need to  get to know them better?

The Tragedy of the Holocaust Essay Most individuals in society think of literature as just a simple story that the author creates. What most individuals don’t know is that authors have a meaning for writing literature, not just simply for pleasure. Most authors write literature to show a message to the audience whether it’s a personal story or a historical event. The author does this by providing the audience with visual image and emotion that is created throughout the story. In the short story â€Å"The Shawl†, author Cynthia Ozick shows the audience the horrible events that took place during the Holocaust and how much individuals suffered during this time. While reading â€Å"The Shawl†, the reader can feel and imagine throughout the book all the suffering and pain that the Holocaust caused the Jewish people. This short story is great for individuals to know what really took place during this time in life and why it’s so important to make sure that our society never turns to this again. After an Individual reads the short story â€Å"The Shawl†, one will see the tragic events that happened during the holocaust. Author Cynthia Ozick starts of her short story by introducing the three sisters that are the main characters in the story, which are Magdna, Rosa and Bella. Rosa was the oldest sister, Bella was fourteen years old and Madna was just a fifteen-month-old baby. Age difference during the Holocaust did not matter. If you were a baby, child, teenager or adult, German soldiers were determine to kill any Jewish individual during this time. Another thing during the Holocaust was how horrible the living conditions were in the concentration camps. While reading, the audience can imagine the living scene at the concentration camp. As Rosa describes the scene of the concentration camp, the audience can picture seeing dirt, bugs and diseases that surrounded them. Rosa also informs the audience of how beauty can be so close to evil. While Rosa is looking inside the concentration camp she sees an electric fence holding her sisters and herself in the darkness. Rosa states about the electric fence that, â€Å"The farther she was from the fence, the more clearly the voices crowded her. The lamenting voices strummed so convincingly, so passionately, it was impossible to suspect them of being phantoms†(Ozick, pg.2655). On the other side of the fence, Rosa explains seeing the beauty of nature that most individuals today take for granted. While Rosa is rushing trying to give Magda back her shawl, she notices outside the beauty of nature standing outside the iron electric fence. Rosa states, â€Å"On the other side of the steel fence, far away, there were green meadows speckled with dandelions and deep-colored violets; beyond them, even farther, innocent tiger lilies, tall, lifting their orange bonnets (Ozick, pg2655). As Rosa shares this vision with the audience, it’s sad to see how you can see something beautiful but yet it’s far away and individuals like Rosa are stuck behind the iron electric fence that is guarding them from this beauty. Rosa shows a point that in our society, we take the nature of beauty for granted. We go by life way to fast to actually stop and look at the beauty that nature provides. Rosa needed something to have hope and have something to look for and the beauty of nature brought her peace while suffering during the Holocaust. It’s the little things in life that helped the Jewish individuals make it threw the Holocaust. Rosa states that, â€Å"In the barracks they spoke of flowers of rain: excrement, thick turd-braids, and the slow stinking maroon waterfall that slunk down from the upper bunks, the stink mixed with a bitter fatty floating smoke that greased Rosa’s skin† (Ozick, pg2655). It’s frightening to know that in our society wherever we are, true evil can be so close to pure beauty. The Holocaust is a great example of how the beauty of nature is yet so close to the horrifying concentration camps. Another issue that Ozick shows in her short story, â€Å"The Shawl† is jealousy. Since many people were suffering during the Holocaust, many Jewish individuals living in the concentration camps were jealous of one another due to the condition of other Jewish individuals clothes or others having more food. Like any other story, Ozick show’s the good guy and bad guy throughout her short story. Ruth, the older sister, puts her life at risk to make sure that her fifteen-month-old sister Magda is safe while Stella, the other sister, was jealous of her little sister Magda. During the Holocaust, many Jewish individuals had to work all day and walk everywhere that they went; there was hardly any rest. When all three sisters would walk, Magda would be carried and wrapped in the shawl. As Stella saw this, her Jealousy and hatred grew more to her little sister Magda. The narrator states that,â€Å" Sometimes Stella carried Magda, But she was jealous of Magda†(Ozick, pg2653). Another thing that Stella was Jealous of Magda was the shawl that she had. Rosa always had Magda wrapped around her. The shawl was Magda safety net. Everywhere that Magda went, she was always wrapped around in the shawl and every time Rosa would leave the barracks, she would always hide Magda with the shawl. One cold day, Stella went up to Magda and simply took her shawl away from her. When Rosa asked why Stella did this she simply stated, â€Å"She was cold† (Ozick, pg2654). By how jealous and selfish Stella was to her sister, this action of taking away Magda shawl resulted in Magda death. Ozick shows throughout her short story how many Jewish individuals suffered from hunger during the concentration camps. Magda was just a baby and needed all the food she could get in order to survive. There would be times that Rosa would not be able to provide food for Magda, which would result in Rosa taking the corner of the shawl and milking it. Rosa states, â€Å"She sucked and sucked, flooding threads with wetness. The shawl’s good flavor, milk of linen† (Ozick, pg2653). Starvation during the Holocaust also made some Jewish individuals violent and selfish. Stella would not give any food to her sister Magda and would keep everything for herself. Rosa would state that during the Holocaust, â€Å"Stella was ravenous, a growing child herself, but not growing much â€Å"(Ozick, pg2653). Rosa was also frightened of others eating Magda by how tiny she was. Some Jewish individuals during the Holocaust started to turn evil just to get something to eat and a way for them to survive. If it was the result of killing a baby for food, then some Jewish individuals would. Even Magda own sister Stella thought about eating her. That is how horrible hunger had gotten to some Jewish individuals. One day, Ruth states that it sounded that Stella said, â€Å"Lets us devour her†(Ozick, pg2654) to another individual in the concentration camp. Each day when Rosa would leave Magda in the barrack, she would always worry that someone would kill her for food. The description that Ozick gives throughout her short story of how skinny the Jews were in the concentration camps shows the audience how much the Jews suffered from starvation. The author states, â€Å"The weight of Rosa was becoming less and less; Rosa and Stella were slowly turning into air â€Å"(Ozick, pg2654). At the end of the short story â€Å"The Shawl†, Ozick shows the audience how heartless the German solder’s, also known as the â€Å"Nazi Party†, were during the Holocaust. When Stella takes away Magda shawl, Magda steps outside her confront zone. In panic, Magda searches everywhere in the concentration camp to find her shawl. As Rosa waives the shawl to her, she sees a German solider carrying her out of the distance; it’s to late to save her. Rosa states as Magda was being carried of in the distance â€Å" She was no bigger than a moth†(Ozick, pg2655). Even though Magda was just an innocent baby searching for her shawl, the German soldiers did not care, their hearts were cold. While Rosa tells the audience about seeing Magda being taking away farther and farther, the reader can feel how heartbroken Rosa is watching her little baby sister being carried to her death. Rosa states, â€Å"All at once Magda was swimming through the air. The whole of Magna travel though loftiness. She looked like a butterfly touching a silver vine†(Ozick, pg1981). The Holocaust is one of the most tragic events in our history. It’s important that individuals know and understand what happened during this tragic time. Author Cynthia Ozick short story, â€Å"The shawl† is a great way for individuals to read, see and feel the pain and suffering that went on during the Holocaust. The author also does a great job explaining the Jewish life while living in concentration camps and seeing the struggles that Jewish individuals had to face. This time period was one of the darkest times in our society. It is important that we never forgot the Holocaust so that way nothing wicked like this will ever happen again in our society. The Holocaust and all the Jewish people that suffered and lost their lives during this time period will never be forgotten.

The International Community and Responsibility to Protect Essay

The International Community has a Right to Intervene in Sovereign States in order to end Serious Human Rights Abuses? Discuss. Humanitarian intervention is definitely one of the most controversial subjects of the recent decades- among states, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia. The centre of the debate is the clash of traditional principles of state sovereignty and new adopted norms on use of force for humanitarian purposes. Despite the political controversies between the countries, humanitarian intervention is now an international norm which calls for action anytime there are serious mass life threatening occurrences in any country. In 2001, ICISS (International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty) - supported by the Canadian Government - introduced a report which would advance Humanitarian Intervention concept to a "Responsibility to Protect" (or â€Å"R2P). ICISS Report referred to the "right of humanitarian intervention" as a "coercive - and in particular military - action, against another state for the purpose of protecting people at risk in that other state" (ICISS, 2001, p. vii). Nationality Differentiation and Its Effect

Have you ever been picked on or made fun of because your nationality is different from someone else's or the color of your skin? If so, then the person who did it was probably a racist person. Racism still exists within all cultures. Some people won't admit they're a racist, but their actions and words prove otherwise. Most people won't directly discriminate other races, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen everyday. Many will argue that their race is superior over another, or that the actions of a few individuals of a certain race determines how that race of people are, therefore making them unequal. I think all people should be treated equally, no matter who they are or what they look like.  However, there is no rights to govern how one person might perceive another person so every one can think or act on how they treat members of another race. Who's to say that if one group of people believes that they are superior over another group, that they won't display those actions if they confronted by members of that group or race? Prejudice people think that their way is right and they have the freedom of speech to express how they feel. If you were to ask if they were racist, they would defend their actions by saying it is how it should be and it isn't wrong.  Racism is broad topic to talk about but once everyone realizes it exists in the U.S. they can take steps to trying to talk to their children about it and maybe even change some of their ways in knowing that racism is wrong. It may not exist where you live, but any place that there will be adults, teens, or children of different races interact together there is a possibility of prejudice.Many other cultures are a target for racism, it isn't just black and white. Japanese, Indian, and Germans aren't safe from racism. I witnessed all kinds of prejudice against a wide variety of races. I've seen other races mistreat whites, blacks, and even Asians.  Basically, racism affects us all. Foreign and indian education Essay

Anyone who has studied in Indian schools and colleges will vouch for the fact that Indian Education system churn out more engineers, doctors and MBAs in comparison to any other country in the world. This has partly got to do with the mentality of Indian parents who believe that sole purpose of educating their kids is to find a well paying job. In India, parents have a huge influence on the major life decisions of their children including which school or college they attend, what branch of education their kids pursue and even which job they take up later in life. No doubt this creates a huge pool of educated individuals but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. Indian Education System From a very young age it is ingrained in the minds of Indian children that the purpose of education is to find a suitable job. This creates an impression on the minds of these children which is difficult to correct at a later stage. Individual aptitude towards any vocation, interests in any particular stream is sacrificed in the pursuit of a degree, which makes them job ready. The consequences towards this approach of education is that in the short term there is a boom in the number of professionals however in the long term areas like researches, arts and allied areas take a beating. This is dangerous for a developing economy like India. This creates a rat race to get admission in reputed educational institutes right from school level putting pressure on youngsters to perform in subjects which might not necessarily appeal to them resulting in disappointment when unable to perform. Foreign Education System Foreign education, on the contrary in general and western education in particular focuses more on individual interests, learning abilities and aptitude towards any vocations. The social system also supports individual education to a great extend unlike India, the purpose of foreign education system is not to land a job to make a living but holistic development of individuals. The performance measurement and grading system in foreign countries encourages blooming of individuals talents in diverse fields and does not restrict children to mere classroom studies. This approach is more practical and suited to overall individual development. Hence the focus of foreign education system is creating individuals with a broad outlook towards all aspects and does not narrow the purpose of education just for the purpose of getting a job. Both approaches have their pros and cons while education system might create more professionals it definitely needs to broaden its scope and focus more on grooming tomorrow’s citizens who can lead the country in all areas. Foreign education system is more liberal in its attitude which can sometime proof counterproductive especially when children from different educational backgrounds experience it for the first time. If we are to compare both education systems, both have their own merits however looking at the broader picture all we can say is it is up to the individual. As Mark Twain, once said, â€Å"Don’t let schooling interfere with your child’s education!† Education is the key foundation for the success of any country and the betterment of any individual. However, given the culture and mindset of different races, there is a different approach towards education. And to be more precise, there is a difference between the approach towards education in the western countries and in India. Apparently, the fundamental is that there is a chalk and cheese difference in the objective of education in both sides. Apparently, the foreign students treat education more like a learning process. On the other hand, they choose the line they are interested in and go only for that course and line of career. In this process, they tend to wait for the right kind of job and don’t really consider time as a hindrance. On the other hand, the objective of education in India has more to do with a fat salaried job, overseas chances, better marriage prospects, status in society etc. However, analysts on both sides say there is a lot of difference in terms of competition, aptitude and the job markets in both hemispheres. While things are rather relaxed owing to the lesser population, more streamlined procedure and lack of unfair means, things are quite different when it comes to India. As such, money becomes the root cause since most of the higher end courses are taken on study loan. So, it is more about circumstances than choices for many students. However, to those who manage to get admission in the foreign schools, once adaptability is achieved, the path is set and clear. Also, given the infrastructure, access to various resources and other facilities, the quality tends to be higher in terms of conducive learning. Though changes are being noticed in India with top league B-Schools focusing on quality and better infrastructure, there is still that gap between foreign schools and Indian educational institutions. With globalisation happening rapidly and economies getting tighter in developed countries, changes are being noticed so let us see how things take shape.1)The big difference is whatever discarded theories we learn in india those theories are not lernt by foreign people 2)Most part of their education is covered under practicals Well to be practical foreign education is a bit better than Indian education but in a certain aspect. Let me just put some flashlight on few areas why Indian’s prefer foreign education: Jobs: This is the main reason why people go abroad and spend millions of money on it. Many students are directly placed in foreign companies and so they prefer foreign education. Other reasons why it is better is that there is a better understanding and relationship between teachers and students. Schools have an open environment of teaching and has got no shyness on topics such as sex. In India no topic such as sex is taught in any school. Students are encouraged to work on their own projects on science and incentives are provided to them. Here ther’s no such sort of a thing. You are on your own. But recently there has been a boom in our Indian education as we are developing and becoming better than other nations. Due to recession many students are now preferring to stay in India now and pursue their course here as in abroad IT sector is the major head of earnings in companies. Foreign companies are suffering a blow down thereby leading to decline in jobs. If we consider the management area, then yeah we may say that foreign is better in providing management degrees than India. We have here only 10-15 reputed colleges which offer good MBA degree. Of these 10-15 the competition is killing and you really need to tie your boots if you wanna get into them. Regarding Science scenario we are in with other nations. Consider for example the CERN EXPERIMENT. This experiment consisted of colliding two protons. The experiment was successful which was feared by many people as it would lead to collapse of earth planet. The CERN association consisted of more than 200 Indian scientists. I totally agree with Lenin’s statement about what he said on professional value of degree. If we do Phd. or masters degree from abroad it has a greater value than the one done from India. Rest I would say that its totally the mindset of the person who wishes to pursue his education either from India or foreign. Mostly students who pursue from abroad have a greater bank balance and so utilize money by showing their standards. Other reasons are that often students of rich families who are not able to get into top Indian colleges in engineering and mbbs head for abroad. Believe me its true. It happens in medical field. Many students pursue their MBBS from abroad due to non selection in Indian colleges. The basic and most important difference between the two educational systems is the stress on math that is given in India (and Europe, I have been told) at the elementary and high school level itself. Mathematics, in my humble opinion, teaches students logical and rational thinking – it lays the foundation of independent and lateral thinking. Indian schools start teaching maths, like multiplication tables, at the elementary level itself. It is given a lot of importance and is a must for students who plan to do science related study in college. On the other hand, high school in America is so flexible that a lot of students who end up majoring in sciences in college do not take advanced maths and calculus in high school. In general, I found that at the end of their 1st year of university, math majors in the US are equivalent to high school graduates in India in terms of math study. This emphasis on maths in high schools and engineering programs is also the reason why India produces so many â€Å"good† software engineers. The analytical thinking taught by mathematics is exactly what is required for software development. The flexibility of the American education system is its greatest strength and also its greatest weakness. Students can choose among a host of classes and courses in high school and college. This means they can change their major (i.e. field of study) midway through college. This usually means that students in the US receive more exposure to a variety of subjects and hence, are more aware of their career options and opportunities. However, the downside is that they can avoid taking courses which are hard in their major. The computer science students in my department in the US are often criticized for avoiding a lot of important computer science courses by taking easier courses from other departments that fulfill their degree requirements. On digging deeper into the root of the problem, I realized that the general problem with the American education (high school and college) system is that it is designed so as not to reduce/hurt the self-esteem of any kid in class. So, the system is designed in such a way that nearly everyone can pass the high-school level. This leads to lowering the standards at the high school, which in turn leads to lowering the standards for college entrance too and subsequent college programs. So, college students in, say, computer science, are learning much less and at a much slower pace than the students in computer science programs in India and Europe This is one of the main reasons why most of the graduate students in computer science in the US are foriegn students; American students are just not able to compete with the quality of foriegn student applicants. College education is becoming common place, with a large proportion of high school graduates opting for it. Universities are under pressure from state governments to take in more students, that is, in turn, leading to reduced quality and lower standards (quality*quantity=constant). Universities are just not able to cope with the quick increases and the corresponding lack of good faculty. The situation is not improving either ! People kick and scream about the fact that immigrants are taking over the country and the hi-tech jobs, but very few people are examining the reasons why this is happening. Most people are fiercely defensive about the country and refuse to believe that anything can be wrong with the country’s education system since they are the technology leaders. However, nobody realizes or admits that this, to a great extent, is due to brain inflow of immigrants from Asia (India included) and Europe. However, the flip side of the coin is that the Indian education and social systems are very hard on kids and completely ignore their feelings, opinions and ambitions. Kids are pushed to study from the age of 3 and non-performers are treated as dolts and ostracized by parents and society. The preferred choice of learning and teaching is memorizing facts. These facts do help in the long run; the multiplication tables we learned in elementary school keep us ahead of our American peers who need a calculator to find out what 6 times 7 is ! However, the memorization approach to study does not allow and teach kids to think independently. The American school system lays stress on individual ability development and encourages kids to express themselves and their opinions from an early age. As a result, most Americans are way better at getting their point across as compared to people from other countries. However, again, the downside of this is that students in the US who are more out-spoken do well in class and outside class too only because they are more effective speakers. In the Indian system, individuals are not asked to stand up infront of the whole class and recite something. Instead, the whole class reads books out aloud together in unison. This allows more timid students to participate and overcome their fear of public speaking (since they are actually speaking with a group). Individual speaking is only done with the teacher one-on-one during â€Å"oral† examinations, where students are asked questions on the subject matter. Both systems work, however, in the Indian system, just because you can’t speak well, does not mean you don’t do well in class. But students in the US build more self-confidence and are much better at public speaking. Indian students on the other hand find it hard to learn to speak up or express their opinions (I know those are really broad generalizations). Classroom discussion and asking questions to the professors is encouraged. However, in India, professors expect you to treat them like God and often use their almost dictorial powers against students who upset them in some way. On a different note, another observation I made, while I was a teaching assistant (TA) for a senior level (3rd-4th year) class of computer science undergraduates, is that their focus in class and attitude towards the course was completely exam-oriented (ofcourse, there were some highly motivated and intelligent students too). They constantly wanted to know if what was being discussed would be on the quiz or the final. Almost no one in the class was attempting to understand concepts. They wanted to learn to solve all the kinds of problems that may appear in the quiz. One may argue that this is a natural thing for students to want. But the fact of the matter is that the American college education system is industry-oriented and hence, is structured so that it produces people who can do a certain type of job efficiently. So it is like a custom-design factory which produces engineers/workers who can do one or two jobs very well but require massive retraining if they have to do something new. In contrast, the education in India (and Europe) is more towards teaching the basic concepts and a broader mass of information. The products of this education system, are therefore capable of taking up several different types of jobs and are not masters of any single job. To do any single job well, they have to go through some amount of training at work. Another realization that the other TA and myself made was that the students wanted to be â€Å"spoon-fed† and told exactly what they needed to do, in order to do well in the course. This mentality of always being told to read something, do some assignment and essentially, being given goal-oriented tasks to perform, works great when students are being trained to work in the industry. And this is an admirable goal – America is built on the strength of these students who can perform what they have been told to do. However, in the long run, these people are not able to adapt quickly to changes in the industry. And they are definitely not prepared to go to graduate school (for a master’s or a Phd). Graduate school is very different from undergraduate school. There is no single book being followed; the reading and writing assignments require paper chases and are ambiguously defined. Also, most courses do not have regular evaluations such as quizes etc. but rely on a final project or term paper – this makes it very hard for one to know how much effort one needs to put into the course. One has to come out of the â€Å"spoonfeed me† mode and learn to think independently. This lack of spoonfeeding in graduate school also means that one has to be motivated by themselves – especially in PhD programs. The amount that you get out of your master’s or PhD depends on the amount of work you put in (more work also means faster graduation). There is no one motivating you to work harder or checking on your progress regularly. (By the way, my arguments in the Master’s versus PhD debate are available here) Something I would like to stress is that the situation I have described is for public universities in the US. Private liberal arts universities provide much better personalized attention to students besides a broader education. Also, non-science programs are stronger in general in the US due to the fact that they follow regular quarter or semester systems – in India, non-science programs usually have year long schedules with exams at the end of the year, whereas in the US, these programs have regular quizes and exams like all other science programs. On the other hand, most university students in India waste their whole year doing nothing; attendence requirements are very low and usually can be bypassed. Overall, I feel that the high school system in the US leaves students at a disadvantage when compared to their peers in India, Europe and perhaps the rest of Asia too. Some Americans cannot point out all the states in the United States on a map, let alone know anything about India (read the humorous commonly asked questions about India or watch Jay Leno’s street walk). This leads me to conclude that an Indian education is overall better atleast till the undergraduate degree (for engineering). However, graduate programs in the US are probably far ahead of most other countries due to the critical mass they have and the fact that they attract the best students and faculty from all over the world.

Analysis of Real Time Surveillance System on Hadoop Image Processing Interface

Traditional security systems work to avoid crimes as much as possible. Real-time Surveillance gives an opportunity to prevent crimes before they can happen. Implementing security measures are also very time consuming and usually requires human interference. An autonomous security system will make security economically viable and it works quickly. Using facial, object and behavior recognition on the video feed provided by CCTV cameras, various criminal activities can be detected, and authorities will be assisted to take action. Covering a large number of CCTV’s distributed over wide space can generate lots of data and requires tremendous processing power to process this data. Hence, we will use Hadoop’s image processing interface to distribute the processing task over the cloud network, so communication between authorities of various areas is enhanced. In the current time, at almost all locations, the security systems work in a rather passive way. CCTV cameras installed in these system record videos and feed them to a human supervisor. Such a security system is prone to human errors. Quick actions are not possible which are necessary for many conditions to prevent adversary. The entire security works locally and provides with limited cloud capabilities. Such a static system is outdated and itself is under security threat of being misused and hacked. Hence we propose a modern, dynamic system with capabilities to work in the cloud with powerful real-time surveillance and arguably cheaper than the existing system. Footages from multiple CCTV cameras will reach to a local station. These video feed will be provided to a preliminary object recognition algorithms and will undergo the process of culling in the local station. After the initial process of object recognition, the video feed will be divided into a small unit, which comprises multiple images. This images will be mapped to the respective nodes for processing and their results will be reduced to get the final output. The Authors in [1] proposed a scalable video processing system over the Hadoop network. The system uses FFmpeg for video coding and OpenCV for Image processing. They also demonstrate a face tracking system, which grouped multiple images of the same people together. Video feed captured is stored in the Hadoop Distributed file system. The system does not state proper security mechanisms and storing such huge amount of data in the HDFS will not be cost-efficient, The system in [2] used Nvidia CUDA enabled Hadoop clusters to improve server performance by using the parallel processing capability of CUDA cores present in Nvidia GPU’s. They demonstrated an AdaBoost-based face detection algorithm in the Hadoop Network. Although equipping the clusters with Nvidia GPU’s might increase the cost of clusters, CUDA cores potentially provide massive improvements in Image processing jobs. Although we aim to implement the system into existing hardware to minimize the cost. The Authors in [3] used the Hadoop Framework to process astronomical Images. They implemented a scalable image-processing pipeline over Hadoop, which provided for cloud computing of Astronomical Images. They used an existing C++ Library and JNI to use that library in Hadoop for Image processing. Although they achieve success, many optimizations were not made and Hadoop was not Integrated properly with the C++ Library. A survey in [4] describes various security services provided in the Hadoop Framework. Security services, which are necessary for the framework such as Authentication, Access Control, and Integrity, are discussed including what Hadoop provides and what it does not. Hadoop has multiple security flaws which can be exploited to initialize a replay attack or view the files stored in the HDFS node. Hence as per the scholarly, a good Integrity check method and Authorization control method are necessary. The object recognition stated in [5] provides an efficient way of recognizing a 3-Dimensional Object from a 2-Dimensional Image. In his stated methodology, certain features of the object remain constant regardless of the viewing angle. Extracting these features specifically will save a tremendous amount of resources as compared to the older object recognition systems that recreate the entire 3-D objects using Depth Analysis. As depicted in [6], the original eigenfaces fail to accurately classify faces when the data is coming from different angles and light sources like in our problem. Hence, we use the concept of TensorFace. A vector space of different Images trained at multiple angles is applied to N-mode SVD to Multilinear Analysis to recognize faces. Behaviour Recognition can be carried out as stated in [7]. The features will be extracted from the video feed and applied to feature descriptors, model events, and Event/behaviour, models. The output will be mapped from feature space to behavior label space where a classifier will map it as normal or abnormal. The system proposed in [8] states an economic, reliable, efficient and scalable surveillance system where data is stored using P2P concept. It avoids load on a single Data Centre and divides the load into multiple Peer Nodes. It also provides authentication as a module between the Peer Nodes and the directory nodes. The system doesn’t present any method to implement computer vision and integrity check. Proposes an open source Hadoop Video processing Interface integrate C/C++ applications in the Hadoop Framework. It provides R/W interface for developers to store, retrieve and analyze video data from the HDFS. Using the available security in the Hadoop framework for video data can give poor performance and security was not mentioned in the HVPI. TensorFlow, a machine Learning System, stated in [10], provides multiple tools to implement multiple training algorithms and optimizations for multiple devices on a large scale. It uses data flow graphs for computation states and operations that change those states. TensorFlow can work very well with Hadoop Framework to distribute the processing in the existing hardware. To provide real-time recognition various pre-processing is done to improve Hadoop and neural network performance. The entire process can be divided into the following phases:- Video Collection: The video feed coming from the video capture device like CCTV will be converted to the Hip Image Bundle (HIB) object using various tools like Hib Import, info. After that, HIB will undergo preprocessing using a video coder like Culler class and FFmpeg. In this stage, various user-defined conditions like spatial resolution or the criteria for Image metadata can be applied. Filters like a greyscale filter provide improvements for various face detection algorithms. The images surviving the culling phase will undergo the preliminary object detection phase using object detection algorithms like tensor flow or provided by a library like OpenCV. Weapons, Cars, and Humans will be detected in this phase. The collected Image will be mapped to MapReduce programming model using the HibInputFormat class. The individual Images are presented to Mapper as objects derived from the HipiImage abstract class associated with HipiImageHeader. The header will determine the what data to map to the respective data node in the network. Mapping Phase: Images, which are flagged as humans, will be mapped to the facial recognition and behavior recognition algorithms in the respective data nodes. Images recognized as cars will be mapped to object detection. Various algorithms for recognition in the mapping phase can be derived from OpenCV, which also inherently used Nvidia CUDA and OpenCL for increased performance in the recognition. OpenCV provides Java interface and can be directly used with Hadoop. Although a self-developed can be used and if required, will be written in C++ and JNI ( Java Native Interface) can use to integrate with Hadoop. Reduce Phase: Criminal faces will be detected during facial detection since the node with the highest confidence value will be declared as the winner. Stolen cars will also be detected in the similar fashion. Human behavior will classify and detect specific suspicious behavior. Although the above paper only discusses specific applications, the entire architecture is scalable to be implemented in specific environments. The system can find applications in various companies offices, police department and various high-security facilities for real-time computer vision assistance. The system can also be implemented over the existing hardware either as a complement to the existing system or as a substitute to the existing system. Once enough test samples are collected, various optimizations can be used like different neural networks, more suited to the specific applications. Optimizations can also be made to the Java Native Interface (JNI) to improve further performance. Various pre-processing techniques in the video coder can be applied to improve the neural network performance.
